11:27 “Unworthily” refers to the manner in which communion was being celebrated rather than the participants’ unworthiness to partake in communion. By their division along lines of class and economic status, the Corinthians had transformed a celebration of the unity of the body of Christ into its very opposite. 11:30 The statement, “For this cause many are weak and sickly … and many sleep,” demonstrates the seriousness of disobedience. “Sleep” here means died.
